A NSW police worker has been charged with “”catfishing’’ after she allegedly made contact with a friend of hers pretending to be a young girl.

She also is alleged to have pretended to be the girl’s father in social media communications with the woman known to her.

“In August (this year), officers from The Hills Police Area Command commenced an investigation after reports a 30-year-old woman had purported to be a man and child – to a woman known to her,’’ police said in a statement.

After a month-long investigation the civilian employee was issued with a court attendance notice last Thursday alleging she had made false representations.

Catfishing is a term used where a person sets up a fake online profile and engages another person who believes they are talking to someone else.

Its believed the alleged victim in the allegations is a friend of the woman charged. Police are not elaborating on the possible motive.

Her employment status is now under review and she has been ordered to appear at Parramatta local court on November 10.

In a separate incident a serving female police officer has been charged with harassing a man known to her using her phone.

Police were informed of the allegations last Friday where it was claimed that the 27-year-old woman was involved in a domestic situation with a 33-year-old male.

“Following inquiries, the woman was arrested at a home in Bardia later the same day and taken to Campbelltown Police Station’’ police said.

“The woman – who is attached to the South West Metropolitan Region – was charged with use carriage service to menace/harass/offend.’’

She was granted conditional bail to appear at Campbelltown Local Court 5 October 5. She has been suspended without pay.
