A teenager was on bail when he went on a wild crime spree across Sydney in which he tried to kill two people with a stolencar, choked a woman and then caused a high-speed crash that left a child fighting for life, police allege.

The 14 year old’s rampage, which began with an alleged car theft in Mosman and allegedly continued with an attempted murderin Woolloomooloo and then finished with a two-car crash in Mascot over the weekend was detailed in Surry Hills Children’sCourt yesterday.

The court heard sad details about the child’s life, including how he had left behind his family in regional Australia andmoved to Sydney recently, despite having no stable accommodation in the city.

As a result the youngster allegedly spiralled into the crime spree which began with the theft of a car from a Mosman homeon November 14, during which it is alleged he choked a woman.

That car was then allegedly used as a getaway vehicle after a home invasion in Woolloomooloo on November 18, during whichpolice will claim he tried to run over two people.

Finally, the teenager was allegedly involved in a serious crash at Mascot on December 3, in which he escaped out the sunroofof the Kia and left his three passengers – two girls aged 12 and 13 and a boy, 13 – trapped.

The court heard that the teenager was going so fast while at the wheel of the Kia that after the impact of the crash, the “vehicle travelled 160m … before trapping the (13-year-old boy) under the wheel”.

“He fled from the scene through the sunroof when his friend or associate was trapped under the car not knowing if he was deador alive,” the NSW Police prosecutor said.

“I would submit there are no sufficient (bail) conditions that can mitigate (the threat). The parents (are) not even in courttoday saying they are able to supervise the young person.”

The court heard that when he allegedly committed the offences in Mosman, Woolloomooloo and Mascot, the teenager was on bailfor offences including breaching an AVO and destroy property.

Yet his solicitor applied again for bail, despite the court hearing about the “extremely concerning” nature of the teen’salleged crimes. He is facing two counts of attempted murder among 13 offences in total.

She also told Magistrate Sue Duncombe that a relative of the teenager would have been happy to look after him, except thatshe was homeless.

The solicitor also told Magistrate Sue Duncombe she had been instructed to enter pleas of not guilty, but that was not formallyentered.

The teen sat in the dock in a hoodie and tracksuit pants with his head in his left hand, as

Magistrate Duncombe addressedthe teenager and told him she was refusing bail as the risk to the community was “simply too high”.

“The strength of the case I assess as being very strong,” Ms Duncombe said. “A custodial sentence, while not inevitable, ispossible. There are no conditions that can mitigate these very serious risks (you pose).

“When I left court yesterday I didn’t know if that young person (involved in the Mascot crash) was going to survive.

“I cannot, in all conscience, release you and let another end up in that position.”

He will reappear in court next week.
