THE parents of shooting victim Jeffrey Brooks came to The Courier-Mail as their last hope in a 22-year quest for justice.
It’s a quest that has taken a terrible toll with the loss of a beloved son and brother compounded by the disintegration of a family as Lawrie and Wendy Brooks refused to let go of their belief Jeffrey’s death was not an accident, as police said, but murder.
At first it was a gut-feeling and then after their own search for answers, it seemed more and more likely. As you will learn in coming weeks as the Dead Wrong campaign unfolds, there is plenty that just doesn’t add up.
There’s an unwillingness to consider what appeared a powerful motive, loose threads, limited forensic examination, vanishing evidence and even claims of threats from the officer in charge. It’s easy to see why Jeffrey’s parents have struggled to accept the police determination.
No-one would listen, but we have. For the past year, The Courier-Mail has gone into uncharted territory.
We’ve gathered statements and documents, conducted fresh interviews with key parties and sourced guns, cars and ammunition.
We’ve conducted laboratory-controlled ballistics tests, performed incident re-enactments and sourced opinion from scientific experts around the globe.
The State Coroner granted us access to all the material presented at Jeffrey’s inquest, where Coroner Trevor Anders delivered an open finding, saying he could not rule out accident or murder based on the evidence provided.
