IT could have been the perfect crime but a key mistake brought down the men who police allege executed bikie boss Mick Hawi.
Inside a car found near a smash repairer in southern Sydney, police discovered a balaclava allegedly worn by the man who shot Hawi dead at point-blank range as he sat in his Mercedes outside Fitness First Rockdale on February 15.
The item was on the passenger side of a Toyota Camry that was found either in or near the smash repairer in Rosebery in mid-March.
Forensic testing of the balaclava allegedly revealed the DNA of the man charged over the shooting — Lone Wolf bikie Yusuf Nazlioglu — was on the inside of the headwear.
It also allegedly had gun residue on it that matched the bullet casings recovered from the scene of Hawi’s murder.
Nazlioglu, 37, and fellow Lone Wolf bikie Ahmad “Adam” Doudar, 38, were arrested leaving a barber shop in Bexley on Friday night after police learned of an alleged plan to travel to Victoria.
They have both been charged with murder.
Despite their gang allegiance, State Crime Command Assistant Commissioner Mal Lanyon said Hawi, a former Comanchero gang president, was allegedly killed over money.
“We will allege there was a financial motive to Mr Hawi’s murder and his death was to prevent further money from being paid to Mr Hawi rather than any traditional OMCG conflict,” he said.
Police will allege Hawi was seeking to collect a $300,000 debt for mediating a conflict between a construction firm and an industry figure.

WHAT CAUSED FALLOUT BETWEEN HAWI AND ACCUSED
It is alleged Hawi had already been paid about $200,000 for his services but came back requesting more.
It is understood Doudar was in line to be paid $40,000 to fix the issue with Hawi. However, it is not known how this was proposed to be done or if he was paid the money.
“It’s the fact people are brazen enough to murder an individual for an amount of money that we find so appalling,” Mr Lanyon said.
Police allege Nazlioglu, who was once friends with Hawi, shot Hawi several times as he sat in his Mercedes. Doudar is accused of organising the execution.
Tow-truck driver Moustafa Salami has been charged with being an accessory after the fact to murder, with police alleging he helped move the getaway car.
None of the men yesterday applied for bail.
