Father of accused murderer Bryer Schmegelsky attempts to shop memoir to journalists

Just days before his teen son and co-accused were found dead by police in Canadian bushland, Alan Schmegelsky contacted journalists trying to get publicity for his self-published memoir.

Suspected teen murderer Bryer Schmegelsky’s father has reportedly sent letters to reporters in an attempt to get publicity for his self-published memoir.

Just days before his son, 18, and co-accused Kam McLeod, 19, were found dead in Canada, ending one of the biggest manhunts in recent years, Schmegelsky’s father Alan wrote to the Daily Mail to say he was a “really good writer”.

The 64-year-old earlier this week claimed his son was on a “suicide mission” as he issued a tearful goodbye via media. He has now attempted to sell his own story on the back of headlines covering the hunt for the troubled younger Schmegelsky.

Mail Online claims Schmegelsky Snr sent copies of his memoir to their newsdesk and also to the Nine Network. Nine has not confirmed whether they received it.

The memoir reportedly details Schmegelsky Snr’s mental health struggles with schizophrenia and contains ramblings about his ex-wife, Bryer Schmegelsky’s mother.

The manuscript’s cover claims Schmegelsky Snr wrote it while drunk in 12 days.

Schmegelsky Snr reportedly claimed in his book the Canadian Red Cross is responsible for a relative’s AIDS diagnosis. He further claimed that he sought to get a multimillion-dollar compensation payout in relation to the allegations.

“I wrote my book so Bryer and I could buy a home … That was our plan,” he told Mail Online.

As the elder Schmegelsky spruiked copies of his book, which News Corp Australia has not seen, the Royal Canadian air force deployed a Hercules plane to search for the two wanted teenagers.

Mail Online claims the book details what home life was like for the younger Schmegelsky, a teen boy caught between two unhappy parents.

Schmegelsky and McLeod are suspected of killing Australian Lucas Fowler and his American girlfriend, Chynna Deese.

CHYNNA DEESE FAREWELLED

At the emotional service in Charlotte for Ms Deese, the 24-year-old’s voice was heard in one of the last voicemails she ever left.

“You can’t see me but I am dancing,” she told her sister, Kennedy, singing the message into the phone.

Ms Deese was remembered as a “free spirit” with a love for “tie-dye” and an adventurous spirit that saw her travel from Egypt to Turkey, Prague to Paris and beyond.

There was standing room only at the New City Church in Charlotte as hundreds gathered to say goodbye to their beloved “Chynna doll”.

The church was adorned with sunflowers, with many wearing the flower printed on dresses or shades of yellow.

While no mention was made of the prime suspects, her sister Kennedy said that she was sure Chynna “would not want us to hate”.

“Your mercy will be found in the form of justice,” she said. “Chynna did not believe in hate and her legacy shouldn’t inspire us to take on that outlook through this tragedy.”

Kennedy said the last image she saw of her sister, CCTV footage of her and Mr Fowler hugging while filling up their blue 1986 Chevrolet van at a petrol station, summed her up perfectly.

“Your last documented moment at a gas station before your final departure … showed the world your luminance as you would never sit quietly and wait for Lucas to pump the gas. That’s my girl! Out and about cleaning car windows and in synch with your partner. Making and taking the time to share your affection,” she said.

Her brother British spoke of how Mr Fowler and Ms Deese met and how they fell madly in love.

“She travelled to Croatia and was working at a hostel where she met Lucas Fowler. She asked him to help her fill in the colouring on a drawing she did. Lucas is actually kind of a shy person but he did help and she says she fell for him right away by the way that he stayed between the lines,” he said. “They fell deeply in love with each other.”

He said Ms Deese was so in love with Lucas’ Australian accent that she wanted their kids to sound the same but was torn at the idea of leaving her tight-knit family.

“Chynna wanted to raise her kids in the US until they were about two years old and then move to Australia until they were about six years old to make sure they had Aussie accents,” he said.

British Deese said when their parents, Shelia and Dwayne, separated when Ms Deese was about 11 years old that it was his younger sister who showed the most maturity about the divorce, telling her older siblings “not to pass judgment.”

Mr Fowler and Ms Deese were found shot to death next their blue Chevy campervan on a remote stretch of the Alaska Highway.

They were just two days into a dream holiday visiting national parks across Canada.

The pair were to spend nearly three weeks on the holiday before Mr Fowler was due to return to his job as a ranch hand.

Schmegelsky and McLeod were at first thought to be missing and perhaps victims of the same killer after their pick-up truck was burnt out not far from where a third body was found. But then it emerged the two teenagers were suspects in all three deaths.
