Mike Amesbury jailed after punching a man to the ground

A British politician has been handed a jail sentence after he pleaded guilty to punching a member of the public.

Mike Amesbury was sentenced to 10 weeks jail on a common assault charge, after he pleaded guilty to punching a man in October, reports Reuters.

Amesbury was suspended from the UK’s Labour Party after CCTV footage showed him throwing a punch at a 45-year-old man in October and repeatedly hitting him after the man was knocked to the ground.

The 55-year-old fronted the Chester Magistrates’ Court on Monday, where the prosecution said Amesbury was approached by a man at public at a taxi queue shortly after 2am on October 26. The man wanted to talk about a local bridge closure.

Prosecutor Alison Storey said Amesbury knocked the man to the floor and then punched him at least five times while he was on the ground, before yelling: “You won’t threaten your MP again, will you? You f**king soft lad.”

Amesbury’s lawyer Richard Derby said the member for Runcorn and Helsby, in northwest England, was remorseful. He asked for a sentence of unpaid work.

“Unprovoked drunken behaviour in the early hours in the streets is too serious to be dealt with by unpaid hours of work,” Judge Tan Ikram said.

There are calls, including from Reform UK chairman Zia Yusuf, for Amesbury to resign and trigger a by-election.
