RAIL aficionado and former deputy prime minister Tim Fischer will lead a 24-day exploration of the world's greatest rail journey next September.

Travelling aboard the luxurious Golden Eagle, Fischer will take tour members along the full length of the Trans-Siberian Railway from Vladivostok to Moscow, travelling 9259km through the Ural Mountains, Russian Steppes and along the shores of Lake Baikal, the world's largest freshwater lake.

Highlights of the tour will include a city tour of Vladivostok and a barbecue on the shores of Lake Baikal, along with visits to Kazan's kremlin and to the former capital of the tsars, St Petersburg. Trip participants will also have the opportunity to branch off the main line to visit the Mongolian capital, Ulaanbaatar. Priced from $22,700 a person twin share, the tour begins on September 4 next year, 2014. The tour price includes international economy air travel from Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Perth, as well as train travel aboard the Golden Eagle, 5-star hotel accommodation in Moscow and St Petersburg and sightseeing tours.
