IT should have been a dream holiday in a tropical paradise to celebrate their marriage.
But Sydney couple Brett and Breannett Denning were hitched for less than 24 hours before they were forced to hunker down in their Filipino hotel room as one of the most ferocious storms in history headed straight for them.
The newlyweds and their wedding party were last night among the millions seeking refuge as super typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda began to approach the island of Boracay, where Mr and Mrs Denning had tied the knot under a beautiful, clear sky on a beach on Thursday.
"We're preparing as best we can within our hotel room. For us it's a packed bag, some water, and a plan to make our mattress into a cubby," said Mr Denning's brother, Mark Denning, who was holed up with his wife Kristen.
Mark Denning said the tropical island had been turned into a virtual ghost town as beaches and streets were closed in anticipation for the massive storm heading their way.
He said Filipino people had been preparing for days, "boarding up shops, removing anything that could possibly become a missile, even trimming coconut trees".
"For the Filipino people who live in shanty towns, with buildings made of ply and rusted corrugated iron sheets, I can only hope that there is a plan in place to take them to safety," he said.
"It is hard to predict the final devastation of this storm, and as we seek shelter from Yolanda's fury we pray that her bark is a lot worse than her bite."
