WHAT would you do with over one million frequent flyer points?
That’s the question people on both sides of the Tasman will be asking themselves after Sir Richard Branson took to Twitter today with an offer to give away all his Virgin Australia Velocity frequent flyer points.

Ever one for the flamboyant gesture, Branson, whose individual tally stands at 1,035,843 points, tweeted:
Just checked my Velocity #frequentflyer balance - over one million points! Any ideas what I should do with them #Australia & #New Zealand?

Nice idea @11novich! Maybe I will give them to someone. @Virginaustralia Can I give away my Velocity #frequentflyer points?

All yours @VirginAustralia! The #AusNZ member who tweets the most fun use of my Points wins them! #WinRichardsPoints http://t.co/0kzQOgNjRq

With the offer trending across Twitter, Virgin Australia has quickly cobbled together a competition and will give the points away to the Velocity member in Australia or New Zealand with the most creative - or hairbrained - suggestion about how you would use them.
The suggestions have come thick and fast, ranging from the vaguely sensible to the totally ridiculous.
Which, of course, means they’ll probably win.

Transfer them to Virgin Galactic. I figure I can at least make it to the thermosphere with a million points. 211 #winrichardspoints

Those points would enable my husband and I to revisit the scene of the crime: we met at a payphone in West Hollywood #WinRichardsPoints 210

Hell yeah @VirginAustralia I'd use them to visit every country in the world that has vineyards - and compare #wines #winrichardspoints 210

To put it in context, with over one million points you could:
- Fly Melbourne to Los Angeles and back ten times in Economy Class
- Take 29 return trips from Sydney to Fiji in Economy Class
- You and four friends could fly return from Sydney-Honolulu in Business Class.
While the offer may be generous, there's no need to get all warm and fuzzy over the silver-maned British tycoon.
He still holds a cool 10 per cent stake in the Australian carrier, despite selling down his share in recent years - which is probably more than you own.
To add Branson’s stash to yours, simply jump onto Twitter and send a tweet containing:
- the first three digits of your Velocity membership number
- the hashtag #winrichardspoints
- your pithiest or most heartfelt response to the question, “What would you do with Richard Branson’s Velocity Frequent Flyer points?”
Entries close on Friday at midnight, with the winner to be announced on Monday.
