QANTAS says it is not worried about the safety of its fleet after a second Melbourne-bound plane was forced to turn back after take-off on Monday night.

Airline spokeswoman Sophia Connelly said an engine vibration occurred on the A330 Airbus as it took off from Hong Kong International Airport at 8.30pm, requiring it to immediately return to the ground.

Ms Connelly said passengers on the QF30 flight were put on alternative flights to Melbourne, and engineers were inspecting the jet.

"There was no safety issue at any time," she said.

"Qantas apologises for any inconvenience caused."

Ms Connelly said the incident was not related to midair drama which struck an overnight Qantas flight from Los Angeles to Melbourne on Friday.

The A330 Airbus reached Hawaii before a fuel pump fault forced it to turn back four and a half hours into the flight.

A passenger on the plane, Brian, who did not give his surname, said the pilot told passengers both fuel pumps on one side of the plane had failed.

The airline insisted the safety of the aircraft was not compromised during the incident.

"Safety is our first priority. We will always put the safety of our passengers and employees first," Ms Connelly said.

"All airlines experience operational issues from time to time, the events of this weekend were unrelated."
