WITH Australia’s rising appetite for the cider alternative in pubs, UTracks is taking the trend to another level by offering an alternative travel option to the wine trails of France.
The specialist European walking and cycling company has launched a self-guided cycling tour along the Calvados and Cider Trails in the Normandy region of France.
Blanketed in apple orchards, the Pays d’Auge region is home to the Route du Cidre, or Cider Route, where numerous cider and calvados (apple brandy) producers reside.
Along with tastings, travellers will be able to visit traditional cellars and pressing sheds, as well as a number of World War II historic sites in the surrounding area, including Omaha Beach and the American War Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer.
Beginning in Hornfleur, the seven-day, self-guided trip is supported with luggage transfers, an emergency hotline and detailed maps and route notes that highlight, with GPS data, the best cider and calvados tasting opportunities and cheese dairies on the route.
The self-guided tour departs regularly from April to October and costs $1490 a person.
