HE was the King of Moomba twice and has a unique souvenir so Molly Meldrum’s Moomba memories might not quite match yours.
But the music industry legend has been a fan of Melbourne’s annual celebration since he was a child and is spearheading a project to collect Moomba stories to mark its 60th anniversary.
Both visitors and participants in the Festival over the past six decades are being urged to share their recollections as part of the People of Moomba campaign on Tumblr.
And for up to 30 people there will be chance to create new Moomba memories. Three floats in this year’s parade will be dedicated to those who have shared their stories.
After being named the King of Moomba in 1985, Meldrum was crowned a second time in 2010 and was “very, very honoured to be part of it again”.
“They surprised me … they made a whole Egyptian theme,” he says, recalling that he was then lucky enough to be given part of the float as a present by the Lord Mayor.
The City of Melbourne hopes the People of Moomba project will create “the ultimate family scrapbook of stories and images.
“Moomba is Melbourne, and we are very proud that our iconic festival is celebrating its 60th anniversary,” said Lord Mayor Robert Doyle.
“The City of Melbourne believes there’s no better way to celebrate than by honouring the people who have enjoyed and participated in Moomba for six decades.
“I encourage all Victorians with fond memories of Moomba to take part in this 60th anniversary People of Moomba campaign.”
