Brisbane is cool, the envy of other Australian cities: GQ magazine

THE accolades keep coming for the River City. Who now says Brisbane’s coolness is the envy of the nation?

FORGET sweltering through summer - Brisbane is getting cooler by the minute.

Uber trendy men’s mag GQ has published a new report revealing Brisbane is undergoing a renaissance of coolness the envy of other Australia cities.

It is the latest in a growing list of accolades for the formerly boring business centre hugging the shores of the brown Brisbane River.

In December, travel bible Lonely Planet’s new Australian edition also lavished praise on Brisbane, calling it our hippest city.

Now GQ has joined the party, compiling a list of seven reasons why Brisbane is cool, naming our arts, music and architecture as among the most cutting edge in the country.

“Cast aside by tourists for the more common culture hubs of Melbourne and Sydney, Brisbane has been (rather unfairly) bunched with the Gold Coast for a number of years as a place of shady night-life, silicon-enhanced bodies and, frankly, not worth forking out the money for the flight,” the report says.

“But there’s something of a renaissance playing out in Australia’s north-eastern city over the last five years.

“Thanks to greater development, the cultural staples have come in droves: cafes, art, design, bars and live music.

“Creative minds banding together to brush the dust off the city and bring it to the forefront of places to see.”

The notoriously hard-to-please Lonely Planet also rated Brisbane highly, while saving some less-than-kind words for the city a little further down the M1.

“Brisbane is Australia’s most underrated city,” the new edition says.

“Sub-culture undercurrents run deep here with cool bookshops, globally inspired restaurants and cafes, bars and band rooms aplenty.”
