A METEOR the size of a mini-van has been captured on camera across the midwest skies of the US.
The fireball was recorded on a US police officer’s dashcam as it shot through the sky.
The meteor appeared at around 1.25am Monday over Lisle, Illinois, and was seen by hundreds of people before landing in Lake Michigan, according to reports.
Lisle police officer James Dexter was on routine patrol near Interstate 88 when he saw “a giant green-lighted orb” streaking across the sky, The Chicago Tribune reported.

He made sure his dash camera had captured the fireball, then told other officers on patrol.
“It looked like the beginning and then the end of a firework that doesn’t explode. It was just a large, green orb that suddenly appeared with a trail, and then it flashed out, and then it disappeared in a streak across the sky,” Mr Dexter said.

American Meteor Society operations manager Mike Hankey said the rock was the size of a mini-van and was travelling at a speed of about 72,000km/h.
The American Meteor Society, which monitors meteor showers, said it had received more than 380 reports of sightings Monday.
“The fireball was seen primarily from Illinois and Wisconsin, but witnesses from Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Iowa, New York, Kentucky, Minnesota and Ontario (Canada) also reported the event,” the society said on its website.
The society said preliminary information from witness reports suggested the meteor ended its flight in Lake Michigan between the shores of Sheboygan and Manitowoc, Wisconsin.
