Sony’s PlayStation Network is currently experiencing a widespread outage, leaving millions of users stranded and unable to access their personal information.

On Tuesday morning, users reported being unable to access online multiplayer gaming, the PlayStation Store and even their own account information and payment details.

At this time, it’s unclear whether the outage is the result of a hack or technical difficulties.

The service status page on PlayStation’s website said that it affected all of its consoles: the PS5 and PS4, but also the PS3 and PS Vita.

PlayStation Plus is the brand’s premium subscription.

Sony has yet to provide a detailed explanation but has told users they “might have difficulty launching games, apps, or network features. We’re working to resolve the issue as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience”.

The PlayStation Network is a behemoth in online gaming, and been expanded to run on smartphones, tablets, and HD televisions.

As of June 2024, the network had approximately 116 million monthly active users, a slight decrease from the 123 million users in December 2023.

Many users were frustrated they couldn’t access several of their single player games that do not feature online multiplayer, while others raised concerns over their personal data being at risk.

On Tuesday evening some PSN users reported being able to get back online but others were still experiencing problems.
