If you thought face-melting guitar solos were a relic of the 1980s, you might be mistaken as a Tik Tok account with almost half a million followers begs to differ.
The page for a virtuoso called Vixen has exploded with interest as the ultra-fast guitarist reignites interest in the art form.
“I do a combination of guitar videos and often playing over songs that people know but putting my own original spin on them, which is a nice mix of creativity and familiarity for the viewer,” she told news.com.au.
“And then my social media is also just a stream of my consciousness. I’ve been trying to get in into telling doing a few little jokes recently. Which is really funny. Well I think it’s funny anyway.”
Vixen’s supersonic skills have created such a buzz that she has been selected to be one of the featured faces in a campaign promoting an all-new American made guitar from legendary heavy metal and hard rock brand Jackson.
But it hasn’t always been smooth sailing for Vixen who has almost two decades of playing under her belt and a style that can mesh with a multitude of genres.
Despite finding success as a producer, songwriter, and guitarist who has toured with acts like MNEK, Sigala, Zara Larsson and Craig David, the past two years of the pandemic have been tough.
Not only has Vixen had to deal with the rigours of being a touring guitarist in an uncertain time, but she’s also had to navigate the music industry as a trans woman.
“There’s certainly challenges to being trans in life in general,” she said. “It’s being in spaces where a lot of people don’t understand what you go through. You have less common ground. And so maybe you feel less like it’s safe space. Or that you need to sort of conform to the majority a bit more.”
However, her massive Tik Tok following and her big campaign with Jackson has given her a platform where she can break down these barriers.
“I do not know of any trans person that will have had as much exposure (in the guitar world) than this,” she said.
“And the more exposure I get, the more representation there is for younger trans people women, people of colour, they’re going to see me and be like it’s possible to be successful.
“Role models are important. And just not feeling like you’re alone is important. That’s quite a big motivation for me, even with my social media as well.
“It’s like, when I see those views go up. It’s not really an egotistical thing. It’s like, there’s probably a chance that someone’s going to see a trans person that hasn’t seen a trans person like me before and it’s going to change their views.”
Now Vixen is likely to hit a new level of recognition as she will be featured in new content that will hit Jackson’s YouTube and social channels this year.
She will be playing a signature Jackson American Series Soloist guitar which she reckons is the “fastest in the world”.
