Two Australian brothers and their US friend were shot execution style with a bullet to the head, sparking suspicions a drug cartel may have been involved in their killings.
The bodies of Jake and Callum Robinson, as well as their friend Jack Carter Rhoad, were found after they vanished while on a surfing trip in Mexico.
Local authorities suggested they were killed following a robbery for their pick-up truck tyres went wrong.
But given the execution style of their deaths, there are now suspicions drug cartels — which are rife in the area — may have been involved, with authorities not ruling out the possibility.
Baja California Attorney-General Maria Elena Andrade Ramírez said the men all had “a hole in their head made by a firearm projectile”.
Ms Andrade Ramírez said the offenders appeared to have been passing through the area when they decided to steal the truck.
“They approached with the intention of stealing their vehicle, and taking the tyres and other parts to put them on the older model pick-up they were driving,” she said.
“When they (the victims) came up and caught them, surely, they resisted.
“These people, the assailants, took out a gun and first they killed the one who was putting up resistance against the vehicle theft, and then others came along and joined the fight to defend their property and their companion who had been attacked, and they killed them too.”
It is understood the bodies were hidden in a deep well covered with boards.
Mexican authorities have arrested three people — Jesús Gerardo Garcia Cota, Ari Gisel García Cota and Cristian Alejandro García — who were all allegedly found in possession of drugs.
The Perth-based parents of the brothers arrived in Mexico and are understood to have formally identified their sons.
Earlier, Emily Horwath has posted several messages paying tribute to her 33-year-old boyfriend Callum.
Ms Horwath, who is based in the US city of San Diego, posted a tribute containing messages, photos and videos of her, Callum and their friends on her Instagram account.
“My heart is shattered into a million pieces. I don’t have the words right now,” Ms Horwath wrote, alongside a broken heart emoji and a photo of her and Callum looking happy while celebrating at a wedding.
“You are one of one,” she wrote in another post.
“I will love you forever.”
“I’d give anything for one more koala hug,” Ms Horwath wrote in a post accompanying a picture of Callum with his arms wrapped around her.
“Praying God has wrapped you in His arms.
“I miss you.”
Callum and Jake, 30, were reported missing after they failed to show up at their Airbnb in Rosarito, a coastal city in Baja California about a 45-minute drive south of San Diego.
The brothers’ mother Debra Robinson on Thursday issued an urgent plea for help to find them.
“Reaching out to anyone who has seen my two sons,” Ms Robinson wrote on Facebook.
“They are travelling with another friend, an American citizen.
“They were due to book into an Airbnb in Rosarito after their camping weekend but they did not show up.”
