John Wick is coming for you.

If you’re one of the formerly retired hitman’s enemies, this is terrifying news — but as a gamer, your first reaction is more likely to be “Awesome!”

Good Shepherd Entertainment have announced they are releasing the game John Wick Hex in conjunction with Lionsgate on PC and Mac, with console versions also planned.

Described “a fast-paced, action-oriented strategy game that makes you think and strike like the professional hitman (of the film series)”, John Wick Hex will feature a totally new story created for the game, with actors Ian McShane and Lance Reddick amongst those providing voice talent for the game.

The developers say the game has been developed closely with the creative and stunt teams from the movie series, calling the game “fight-choreographed chess brought to life as a video game, capturing the series’ signature gun fu style while expanding its story universe.”

According to the announcement, “Players must choose every action and attack they make, while considering their immediate cost and consequences.

The designers have gone with a graphic noir art design.

Every move in John Wick Hex feels like a scene from the movies, and every fight contributes to your progress on the job and requires precise strategic thinking.”

Fans of turn-based combat games like XCOM, Jagged Alliance 2 and Shadowrun: Hong Kong — not to mention Good Shepherd’s own Phantom Doctrine — will notice some familiarness in the gameplay trailer, in which the game appears to feature turn-based combat, allow the player (as the titular hitman) to plan and execute moves against opponents ranging from shooting them in the face to punting their testicles into a neighbouring postcode.

The designers have gone with a graphic noir art design complementing the style found in the movies and have promised that progression in the story will unlock new weapons, suits and places to be Baba Yaga — with different weapons bringing different tactics and finite ammunition meaning every shot will have to count.

While there’s no official release date yet, the game appears to be more than just a cool premise and a trailer, so a late 2019 release doesn’t seem out of the sight picture.
