New OPPO phone rivals Samsung Galaxy and wows with features

It’s not a brand favourite in the Aussie smartphone world, but this new phone really impresses, says Elly Awesome.

Oppo's new flip phone puts it into 'flagship space' against Samsung

REVIEW

OPPO is about to release an incredible new Android flip phone onto the Australian market called the OPPO Find N2 Flip.

Boasting a long lasting battery, large outer cover screen and pocketable form factor, it sets out to rival Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip4.

Unboxing

Unlike a lot of premium smartphone brands that are skimping on supplying a charger with their devices, OPPO has gone above and beyond with what comes in the box. There’s a 44W SUPERVOOC™ fast charger, USB-C charging cable, start up documents with a SIM eject tool, and even a clear two-piece phone case. The phone itself has a really unique matte textured shell that seems entirely fingerprint resistant, which I love and is rare for smartphones these days. And it still has an incredibly premium look and feel with a very smooth and well-made hinge mechanism.

Features

Immediately this phone has a wow-factor. What sets it apart from others is certainly its large 3.26-inch cover screen that’s found on the outside of the phone when closed, clamshell-style.

It’s great for checking your notifications, quickly setting a timer or alarm and checking the weather. I hope more apps will come to the cover screen as it even feels big enough for a scroll on social media.

When the phone is opened to use like a regular smartphone it reveals a bright 6.8-inch main display with up to a 120Hz refresh rate. The screen also lacks a severe crease at its folding midsection, which most other foldable phones possess.

It’s barely noticeable compared to the other folding phones that I have tried and it only leaves the most minimal, shallow indent on the display.

Cameras

Using the phone is awesome because you can have it folded at all kinds of angles, such as a 90-degree angle so it can sit itself on your desk, which is great for video calls, taking photos or recording a video. More excitingly, you can use both the inner screen and the outer cover screen at the same time to have two viewfinders while using the cameras.

This also allows you to take advantage of the higher quality 50MP main camera on the ‘outside’ of the phone and use it as your selfie camera. Though, the phone also has a fairly impressive 32MP selfie camera on the inside and another camera on the back – an 8MP ultra wide lens.

The image quality is fairly impressive, and the 50MP back camera is able to produce bright, evenly balanced, sharp and colourful photos. The portrait mode works quite well, even around my wavy hair, and there are built-in beauty filters if that’s your scene.

The phone records high quality, fairly stable videos from the main 50MP camera, though it can get grainy in low light.

The 32MP selfie camera was also decent but tended to over expose on occasion when the lighting was unbalanced, especially if you have a moving subject in frame.

It’s definitely a device to consider if you want a smartphone that’s more pocketable. Picture: Elly Awesome

Battery life

This flip phone has one of the best batteries of its niche. It has a 4300mAh battery, which can last all day, even when watching hours and hours of videos or scrolling social media.

And its 44W included charger can charge the phone to around 50 per cent battery in approximately 23 minutes.

Should you buy it?

After an early hands-on with this phone I’m really impressed so far. It’s an awesome flip phone, and definitely a device to consider if you want a smartphone that’s more pocketable.

The OPPO Find N2 Flip is available to pre-order now from JB Hi-Fi or Harvey Norman for $1499, for a March 16 launch date. And it comes in two fantastic colours – Moonlit Purple or Astral Black.
