A technical bug has caused Apple’s voice-to-text system to replace the word “racist” with the word “Trump” for a brief second before turning back.
The dictation system automatically typed “Trump” when the word “racist” was spoken, but quickly corrected itself and retyped “racist”, as reported by iPhone users on Tuesday.
“We are aware of an issue with the speech recognition model that powers Dictation and we are rolling out a fix today,” an Apple spokesperson said in a statement on the same day.
The company said the glitch was causing its system to incorrectly suggest the word “Trump” when dictating words with “r” consonants.
Apple did not provide further comments on why the system heard “Trump” when users were saying “racist” but acknowledged that speech recognition models used in the dictation feature can occasionally show incorrect words where there is a phonetic overlap.
The Wall Street Journal found that other words beginning with R such as “rampage” and “rampant” also caused the glitch.
The issue has now seemingly been resolved.
This comes as Apple was the target of President Donald Trump’s latest social media frenzy, after the company’s shareholders voted to maintain diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives despite conservative backlash.
Board members urged shareholders to reject the proposal as the company is in compliance with relevant laws and aims to “create a culture of belonging where everyone can do their best work,” as reported by Reuters.
In response, Mr Trump wrote in all caps, “Apple should get rid of DEI rules, not just make adjustments to them.”
“DEI was a hoax that has been very bad for our country,” the Truth Social post continued.
“DEI is gone!!!”
On Monday, Apple announced a US $500 billion investment in the country’s facilities, infrastructure and various projects.
In another all caps post on Truth Social, Mr Trump claimed the lofty investment showed “faith in what we are doing, without which, they would’nt (sic) be investing ten cents. Thank you (CEO) Tim Cook and Apple.”
Apple’s investment comes after Mr Trump announced a 10 per cent tariff on all imports from China, where Apple makes most of its products, earlier this month.
