Apple iPhone 14: What to expect at the September Apple Event

Renowned Apple tipsters are forecasting big changes when the tech giant releases its new smartphone. Here’s what to expect.

New iPhone expected to be released soon

YOU could end up paying more for your next iPhone, with renowned Apple tipsters forecasting price rises for most of the tech giant’s upcoming smartphones.

The predictions come just over a week before Apple is due to host its next launch, at 3am on Thursday, September 8.

New iPhones are expected to be on the menu, with a host of new features introduced to justify upgrades and higher prices.

We’ve rounded up the rumours and this is what you can expect so far.

HOW MUCH EXTRA?

If the tipsters are correct, the top price of the Apple iPhone could creep closer to the $3000 mark.

TF International Securities analysts Ming-Chi Kuo predicted new Pro model iPhone 14 models would feature “price hikes,” and Wedbush analyst Dan Ives narrowed price rises down further.

“While the base iPhone will stay at the same price, we believe a $US100 price increase on the iPhone 14 Pro/Pro Max is likely in store given component price increases as well as added functionality on this new release,” he said in a research note obtained by Mac Rumours.

The base level smartphone, the iPhone 14, is unlikely to be affected by the rise.

In Australia, adding another $146 to the price of an iPhone would see the company’s Pro handsets start from almost $1500, and the iPhone 14 Pro Max could tip the scales at $2865.

IS THE NOTCH FINALLY GONE?

Apple leaks indicate the notch will be no more in the iPhone 14.

It may be replaced by something else at the top of the new devices, however.

Leaked video footage and photos captured from Chinese social media by DuanRui showed an iPhone with two smaller cut-outs that experts are calling a punch and dual-punch hole on its screen.

The cut-outs would take up much less of the iPhone’s screen, and hand back more space for smaller icons.

WHAT ABOUT THE CAMERAS?

With every iPhone launch, expectations for incoming cameras rise.

And invitations to its 2022 event, tagged “far out,” have tipsters talking.

‘Far out’ could relate to a longer zoom lens for iPhone 14 Pro models, which currently offer up to a 3x optical zoom compared to the 10x zoom in Samsung rivals. Some analysts predict this won’t feature until next year, however.

Other analysts have pointed to the potential launch of an astrophotography photo mode, like Google launched in its Pixel range of smartphones.

What is more widely expected is the addition of a 48-megapixel camera for iPhone 14 Pro models.

The new camera would be one of the biggest updates to iPhone cameras to date, which currently peak at just 12 megapixels.

Bloomberg analyst Mark Gurman, who first tipped the megapixel boost, says Apple will also “get improvements to video recording”. A jump to 8K footage could be on the cards.

WHAT ELSE WILL BE NEW?

New video leaked from Chinese media shows an iPhone with a coloured metal rim that looks purple in the light.

New iPhone 14 handsets are also expected to come in colours including gold, navy blue, silver, and graphite.

Like other iPhone releases before it, this one is expected to get a power boost with an A16 chip.

There’s also an outside chance the new iPhones could get satellite technology — not for placing satellite calls but for reporting locations in an emergency or sending a short message.

Apple is also tipped to change its iPhone line-up. The Apple Mini could be destined for the chop under this plan, while an iPhone 14 Max emerges, offering access to a larger, 6.7-inch screen without the same price tag as its Pro Max equivalent.

HOW CAN I SEE IT?

Apple will deliver a hybrid iPhone launch event in 2022, with video streamed to people in its Apple Park campus.

Everyone can tune in to watch what’s unveiled online, however, both on its website or on YouTube where, inexplicably, hundreds are already queuing virtually for the show.
