DESIGNER Wayne Cooper has vowed to "vigorously defend" assault charges arising from an alleged domestic dispute last night. Video: Waverley Police Station.

TOP Sydney designer Wayne Cooper has issued a statement denying charges laid by police after a disturbance at his home last night.

The fashion star was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm, common assault and intimidation.

He was also served with an interim Apprehended Domestic Violence Order.

In a statement issued this afternoon, Cooper said he "strenuously" denied the charges and asked for privacy.

“I am devastated with recent events I intend to vigorously defend the charges that have been brought against me,” the statement said.

Cooper was arrested today at the Tamarama home he shares with wife Sarah Marsh.

He was collected by police from the house around 9am today and taken to Waverley Police Station for over two hours of questioning.

Cooper emerged briefly from the police station halfway through for a smoke, before going back inside.

While smoking he claimed the allegations were "ridiculous". Asked whether he had assaulted his wife, he replied: "Absolutely not".

He refused to reveal what had happened, but assured that he would explain all to supporters later.

"They will (be told what happened) in due course," he said.

After speaking he went back inside before he was driven home in the back of a paddy wagon.

Cooper's solicitor Lila Morris earlier told The Daily Telegraph that the incident had been blown out of proportion.

"It's just something silly," she said.

London-born Cooper, who came to Australia in 1985, is one of Sydney's best-known designers.
