Olympic champion Jakara Anthony will return home to Australia after undergoing surgery on an injured collarbone during moguls training in Sweden.
The injury will sideline the Beijing Winter Olympic gold medallist for the upcoming World Cup moguls event in Georgia, but it is unclear how much longer she will be out of action while she recovers at home in Australia.
After a record breaking 2023-2024 campaign – the most successful season ever by a mogul skier – Anthony carried her form into the new season with back-to-back podiums to start the northern winter.
But, 14 months out from the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics, Anthony’s World Cup season has been put on ice after the training mishap in Sweden at the weekend.
“Unfortunately I had a crash in Idre Fjall during dual moguls training on Saturday,” Anthony wrote on Instagram alongside a photo of herself in her hospital bed.
“It turns out when you put your shoulder into an icy mogul you do some damage.
“Surgery in Oslo has been a success. I’ll be watching the next World Cup from home in Australia. Good luck to everyone competing – I’ll be cheering you all on.
“Thanks everyone for all the love and support.”
Anthony had claimed her first gold medal of the season – and her 23rd victory in the single moguls of her career – the day before the injury.
The 26-year-old’s manager Julia Brukner said Anthony would return to Australia to commence her rehabilitation.
This weekend’s World Cup round in Alpe d’Huez, France, has already been cancelled due to a lack of snow, meaning the round in Bakuriani in Georgia on December 20-21 had been the next stop on the calendar for Anthony.
The next moguls World Cup event after that is at Waterville in the United States on January 24-25, leaving Anthony with plenty of recovery time.
The Olympic Winter Institute of Australia said the moguls star would consult with medical and training staff in the next week to decide on her recovery plan.
“Jakara had a great start to the winter,” OWIA chief executive Geoff Lipshut said.
“This training accident is unfortunate, but Jakara is very positive, looks forward to coming home and then working on her rehabilitation plan in Australia.”
In one of the most dominant World Cup campaigns in history last season, Anthony won a staggering 14 out of 16 FIS World Cup events – the most of any moguls skier in history.
Anthony’s unmatched season handed her the hat-trick of World Cup winner’s crystal globes for the singles, dual and overall moguls champion.
