Supercars driver Fabian Coulthard comfortably shares the road with drivers who travel at up to 300km/h – but it’s when he’s on his bike that he feels most at risk.
A month ahead of the Superloop Adelaide 500, the DJR Team Penske driver yesterday enjoyed meeting Santos Tour Down Under champion Daryl Impey.

Coulthard, who cycles to keep in peak fitness, said he used to live in Melbourne, where “the people understand cyclists and share the road with them’’.
“I’m living on the Gold Coast now and there’s a lot of motorists they don’t give a s**t about us. I give cyclists room when I’m in the car,” he said.
“It’s quite clear the ones that don’t understand, they don’t give you enough space.
He said he admired WorldTour cyclists.
“They are the engine and as for us we need to be able to be fit to deal with ambient temperatures sustaining high heat for long periods of time,’’ he said.
Impey, 35, who today starts his defence of his crown at Tanunda, said he admired the concentration levels motorsport drivers needed to be at their peak in every millisecond of their discipline.
