“It’s one of the biggest road cycling events in the calendar and I can’t wait to see the good competition with hopefully great results for the German riders.

“Now I realise just how many people I motivate and how many people I am taking on my journey.”

The Kyrgyzstan-born cyclist also had a serious accident in May 2009.

She suffered severe injuries and was placed in an induced coma after she was knocked off her bike by a vehicle.

Vogel returned to work with the German Federal Police.
