What’s the Buzz: Why I won’t be watching Nick Kyrgios in Wimbledon final

Good luck to Nick Kyrgios when he faces off against Novak Djokovic in the biggest match of his life in the Wimbledon final, but PHIL ROTHFIELD won’t be watching. Here’s why.

On Sunday night I will not be watching Nick Kyrgios in the Wimbledon final.

I don’t care if he wins or loses.

Anyone who spits at the crowd on centre court and constantly abuses match officials in the manner in which he did earlier in the tournament is not worthy of our support.

This follows years of petulant and embarrassing behaviour on the international circuit.

He is a great player but a ratbag.

Give me Ash Barty, Pat Cummins, golfer Cameron Smith, or Chris Waller any day of the week.

Not just champions on the international stage but wonderful humans and the very best role models.

People we are so proud of from Royal Ascot, to Lord’s, Wimbledon and Augusta.

Compare these legends to the tennis player.

All his ranting, raving and rudeness. The constant insults and abuse of others.

A player who once called an umpire “a f…ing tool,” at the Cincinnati Masters.

You’d need an eight-page liftout to publish all his rubbish.

And then every time you want to give him a second chance, he screws you over.

Sadly, Kyrgios has a huge following among the younger generation.

He has 2.5 million Instagram followers.

They like his cool clothes, his music and a lot of his madness, the swagger and even the unapologetic arrogance. That he is seen as a showman.

This is not a good thing.

No doubt Channel 9 will have millions watching on Sunday night.

However, I’m not sure they’ll all be cheering for Kyrgios.

They will watch the event, not the player.

Like me, there are many who have finally had enough.
