Rafael Nadal’s pregnant wife admitted to hospital, misses US Open

Rafael Nadal’s heavily pregnant wife Xisca has been admitted to hospital and has not travelled with the tennis star for the US Open.

Rafael Nadal’s wife Xisca has been admitted to hospital 31 weeks into her pregnancy.

According to reports in Spain, Maria Francisca Perello remains in a private clinic room in Palma and may potentially undergo surgery in coming days.

According to Diario de Mallorca, Perello could undergo an operation as early as Thursday (AEST) if that treatment option is recommended by her doctors.

She remains under observation as a precautionary measure at such a critical stage of the pregnancy.

It is reported Nadal’s sister Maribel has travelled to be by Perello’s side. The 34-year-old’s parents have also been seen at the hospital.

The 22-time grand slam champion, however, remains in the United States ahead of the US Open, beginning Tuesday (AEST) in New York.

The Spanish superstar played the Cincinnati Masters last week where he suffered a shock loss to Borna Coric in his first match.

He heads into the final grand slam of the year having won two of the three grand slams this year and is the outright second favourite with most betting agencies to win the tournament, behind Daniil Medvedev.

The couple have not talked about their pregnancy in public and their happy news was only revealed in June when she was spotted with a baby bump following the French Open.

After 17 years together, the couple are getting ready for parenthood for the first time.

Perello was spotted wearing loose fighting clothing during the Champions League Final between Liverpool and Real Madrid.

Speculation grew and reached a pinnacle after appearing to be sporting a baby bump on a yacht as she enjoyed a holiday with Nadal.

Xisca and Rafa were together for 14 years before marrying in 2019 and have kept their relationship private, which is no mean feat for one of the biggest athletes in the world.

Xisca also runs the Rafael Nadal Foundation.

She is not often seen on the sidelines either, saying that Nadal’s hyper-focus during competition can lead the pair to fight.

“He needs his space when he is competing,” she said in 2011.

“And just the idea of me hanging around and waiting on his needs all day tires me out.

“It would asphyxiate me. And then he would have to be worrying about me … No.”

Nadal suggested earlier this year that he wanted to have children with his wife in the future.

“I would like to have children: boys, girls. I am a person who loves children and I am a family type,” Nadal told The Sun earlier this year.

“But I also tell you that the reality is that the years continue to pass, I would like to start doing all this when my sporting life will allow it.

“I think it’s also and above all about taking care of the children. I don’t know if travelling all year and having children is ideal.”
