Bernard Tomic will jump to 214 in the world and likely head to US Open qualifying after his first ATP tour event in four years ended in the second round in Spain.
But as Tomic lost, teen star Maya Joint took down former US Open champion Emma Raducanu and Aussie teenager Emerson Jones took a big step towards the main draw of Wimbledon.
Tomic made the main draw of an ATP event for the first time in four years at the Mallorca Open, taking down compatriot Rinky Hijikata in the opening round to knock over another milestone in his comeback from the lower reaches of world tennis.
But the former world No.17 found the going a bit tougher against Spanish veteran Roberto Bautista Agut, who knocked him over in straight sets on the grass courts, having last week reached the semi-finals at the Queen’s Club Championship.

Having jumped from 248 in the rankings by making the final 16 in Spain, Tomic, 32, who skipped Wimbledon qualifying given he was waiting on someone to drop out to get a start, looks set to try to instead earn a main draw spot at Flushing Meadows when qualification begins.
As Tomic made steady moves forward, so to did Australian teenager Joint, who beat British star Raducanu in front of her home crowd at the Eastbourne International to ramp up her Wimbledon preparations.
Joint, 19, is already in the main draw at Wimbledon and was beaming after her three-set win, having lost the opening set.
“Today was really tough, there was a lot of up and downs, lot of momentum switches, but I’m really glad that I was able to tough it out in the end,” she said.
“I’m really glad I was able to win this one. I definitely try to hit the lines. Doesn’t always work, so I’m glad it worked today.”
In Wimbledon qualifying, 16-year-old Jones was among a slew of Australian winners, with Talia Gibson, Priscilla Hon, Alex Bolt, Li Tu and James McCabe all booking places in the last round of qualifying.
Jones has only played one grand slam main draw, the Australian Open, while Bolt is looking to do what he did last year, having started as an alternate in qualifying before making his way to the main draw.
“My game style really suits the surface,” he said.
“It’s just the love of the game, the love of the grass. I feel at home on this stuff.”
