THINGS are on the up and up for Australian world surfing champion Tyler Wright after a slow start to the year.

Chasing a big win for the first four months of the year, she finally broke through in Brazil last month.

Now Wright and Hawaiian Josh John Florence have been nominated in the action category of the annual ESPY awards for their world title winning feats in 2016.

Wright is the sole Australian nominated across multiple categories in the annual awards.

Wright’s recent win in the Brazil leg of the women’s world tour lifted her to No. 1 alongside six-time world champion Stephanie Gilmore.

It also puts her back on track to defend the maiden world crown she won in 2017.

Female surfers have a strong history at the ESPYs with Gilmore winning in 2013, Maya Gabeira in 2009 and Sofia Mulanovich back in 2006.

Wright is up against the likes of Lacy Baker (skateboarder), Anna Gasser (snowboarder), and Kelly Sildaru (skier) with Florence nominated alongside Oysein Braaten (skier), Nyjah Huston (skateboarder), and Mark McMorris (snowboarder).
