THE Wallaroos dream of a World Cup victory is over, destroyed by a rampaging France in Dublin.

The Australians crashed 48-0 to their determined opponents in a result which has quashed any hope of the Wallaroos making the semi-finals of the tournament.

The trouncing followed on from the Wallaroos just being pipped for victory in their thrilling opener against hosts Ireland last week.

“Tonight we were outplayed by a better side,” said Wallaroos coach Paul Verrell.

“They were well drilled and started the match at a high intensity and we weren’t able to match them.

“To record a result like that after the promising performance we put in against the Irish is disappointing, but we must now turn our attention to our final pool game against Japan, which will be an important match for us.”

While the Australians fell 19-17 in the match against Ireland, France scored a whopping 74-14 victory over Japan to show they would be formidable opponents for the Wallaroos in their match-up Monday morning.

Much of the damage was inflicted by French winger Shannon Izar who scored three times in the opening 25 minutes to help the French to their 29-0 halftime lead.

Only the top placed nation from each pool and the top ranked second-placed side progress to the semi-finals.

Australia play Japan in their final pool match on Friday where they are chasing a spot in the fifth place playoffs.
