“It was the best trip and it really opened my eyes,’’ Wright said.

“We also got to see the impact of poaching and just how careful we really must be.’’

The trip also gave Wright valuable time with Fanning, a close friend and source of crucial intel on being a professional and highly successful surfer.

“The best thing about Mick is he actually takes the time to teach and explain and listen,’’ said Wright, who will carry the world No. 1 ranking into the US Open but can be knocked out of the lead with a substandard performance.

Last season Wright had an emphatic lead at the midway point of the season but this time Australians Sally Fitzgibbons and Stephanie Gilmore are hot on her heels, along with American Courtney Conlogue and French surfer Johanne Defay

After racking up five wins last year, Wright was winless until the fourth round of the world series this year.

Her win at the Oi Rio Pro and then a semi-final appearance at the last event in Fiji moved her into the top spot.
