AUSTRALIA’S top female surfers are riding a wave of extraordinary success on the world stage with the best and brightest in the sport honoured at the World Surf League awards.

World champion Tyler Wright, junior champion Macy Callaghan and six-time world titleholder Stephanie Gilmore were just two of the Aussie women who left the surf to stride down the red-carpet at the annual event on the Gold Coast.

Wright won her maiden world crown in 2016 with Callaghan and Ethan Ewing winning the world junior crown at Kiami in January.

Wright’s feat was made more difficult by the fact her brother Owen spent 2016 recovering from a potentially career-ending head injury suffered in a wipe-out and the loss of an uncle.

“I want to thank my tour family and the people I travel with. There is so much love in the surfing community and I am so lucky to be a part of it,” Wright said.
