NEARLY two decades after she competed at her first world triathlon championships, veteran Annabel Luxford has raced off with a bronze at the world long triathlon in Denmark.
Luxford ensured Australia was on the podium at the world long distance titles in Odense for the second year with her bronze medal in the gruelling race.
The 36-year-old, who finished fourth at a world junior triathlon 19 years ago, relied on her trademark power run to medal in the race involving a 3km swim, 120km cycle and 30km run.
Local Helle Frederiksen, who won silver behind Australian Sarah Crowley last year, went one better to win the women’s race on Sunday from Chile’s Barbara Riveros and Luxford.
“That’s a dream come true. We had a strong field today and I wanted so badly to win. To become a world champion in Denmark, I am speechless,” said Frederiksen.
Luxford said she was delighted with her podium finish.
“I really enjoyed the distance and although I didn’t have one of my best races, it was sweet relief to put together a solid day after struggling with my health in May and June.’’
