IT’S an honour roll which includes names like world championship hopefuls Sally Fitzgibbons, Laura Enever and Nikki Van Dijk and teenager surfer Macy Callaghan wants to write her name on it.
The rising star of Australian surfing has earned herself the right to a shot at extending Australia’s domination at the next world junior surfing championships after winning five Pro Junior titles this season.
The teenagers latest victory came in the Subway series on Sunday which secured her the Australian junior qualifying series crown and a shot at next years world surfing championships at a venue still to be determined.
Just 15 but already earmarked as a champion of the future, Callaghan hails from a well known breeding ground for surfing talent — the NSW central coast.
The area north of Sydney is where the likes of world tour surfers Matt Wilkinson and Ace Buchan honed their skills and where star like Callaghan and Kirra-Belle Olsson, the niece of Wilkinson, are surfing their way into the headlines.
On Sunday Callaghan beat Tweed Heads’ Kobie Enright for the Subway event title and junior series crown.
“My biggest goal this year was to win the junior qualifying series and a few Pro Junior events, so I’m happy that I achieved them,” Callaghan said.
Callaghan is working towards eventually joining Fitzgibbons, Van Dijk and Enever on the world tour.
“This year is all about getting my points up on the ratings,’’ she said.
“I’ve got no pressure on me so that it good.
“I’m not sure about the future yet. I’m just going to see where this takes me.’’
Last year Isabella Nichols was the only Australian surfer to win a world crown when she took out the WSL junior titles.
Callaghan regularly surfs against Nichols who is expected to make her way onto the world tour sooner rather than later.
