Teenage teammates Millie Boyle and Kezie Apps go head-to-head for NRLW’s greatest prize

In a fairytale sporting story for two Bega High School friends, Millie Boyle will go head-to-head with Kezie Apps in the WNRL grand final when the Broncos take on the Dragons.

Millie Boyle thought playing Oz-Tag alongside Kezie Apps as a teenager would be the height of her rugby league career – she was wrong.

In a fairytale sporting story for two Bega High School friends, Boyle will go head-to-head with Apps at ANZ Stadium in the NRL Women’s grand final when the Broncos take on the Dragons.

Broncos prop Boyle spoke about her teenage friendship with Dragons Captain Apps as she prepares to go head-to-head with her mate for the ultimate women’s rugby league glory.

“We both went to the same high school and we are from the same area, but playing for different clubs is fine,’’ Boyle said.

“I don’t think it would have ever cross my mind (that they would be playing at ANZ Stadium in a grand final). We played ‘tag’ together and I think that is as far as we would ever get.

“Now to be playing against each other in a grand final is something we will never forget. Everyone back at home will be tuning in that is for sure.’’

Players from both team admitted the decider had a State of Origin feel with Brisbane to go up against George Illawarra.

The Broncos will be using Queensland’s Origin loss this year as motivation to get one back on NSW at the Dragons’ expense.

“100 per cent it has an Origin feel,’’said Maroons and Broncos captain Ali Brigginshaw.

“And I still feel that loss to NSW. It is a big rivalry with that NSW and Queensland feel.’’

Last week’s 10-8 loss to the Warriors has been a wake-up call for a Broncos side aiming to claim back-to-back titles.

“We need to be on our game,’’ Brigginshaw said.

“We need to play our best. We came back against the Warriors but still lost. It was a big wake-up call and we know what we have to do. We have to show up to get the win. It is about the team coming together.’’

But they will have to stop the form team of this year’s competition with Boyle’s high school friend Apps out to deliver glory to St George in the battle of Bega.

“It is all new for me but some of the girls have been in a grand final before so I have been getting some advice of them,’’ Apps said.

“It has been a pretty chilled week and we have tried to stay as relaxed as possible and take it all in.

“They are defending champions but we are very confident with the way we have prepared. We have won more game to really show what we can do.’’
