Sydney Uni Flames fire up in defence for double victory

THEIR first win bought relief but their second against reigning WNBL champions Townsville Fire has given the Sydney Uni Flames a dose of self belief for the season ahead.

The Flames toppled the WNBL favourites with their thrilling one point victory over the Suzy Batkovic lead side in Sydney on the weekend.

Chasing their first points of the season, the Flames came from behind for their way win over Bendigo before backing up with their shock victory over Fire on Saturday night.

Chasing their first points of the season, the Flames came from behind for their way win over Bendigo before backing up with their shock victory over Fire on Saturday night.

“We finally figured out how to play defence,” said coach Cheryl Chambers.

“It just goes to show how far you can come in a week if you put the work and belief in.”

In an impressive performance, American import Jennifer Hamson kept star Batkovic to just 12 points for the game.

Batkovic has been averaging 17 points over game this season.

“The fact Jen kept Suzy to that was fantastic but everyone contributed something and that made the difference,” she said

Chalmers has been frank in admitting he side could have, and should have, won their opening matches of the season against Perth Lynx and the Canberra Capitals but lacked the defence to do so.

“They own know they can play defence and what the result will be when they do,” she said.

“The first win on the weekend for us was relief. The second has given us confidence that we can talk on anyone in the league.”

On Friday the Flames defeated Bendigo 74-69 with Alex Wilson scoring 15 points, which included three three-pointer.

Against Townsville on Saturday Leilani Mitchell scored 20 points and five rebounds with American import Asia Taylor scoring 19 points and 13 rebounds in her best performance to date.
