AROUND this time a year ago Kelsey Griffin was watching the Opals on TV at the Rio Olympics.
Now, 12 months on, she has made a spectacular debut for the Australians women’s basketball team which has earned her Swoop Play of the Weekend honours.
It’s unusual enough to make your Australian debut at age 30.
It’s even more unusual to claim the MVP honours and be named in the All-Star Five at your debut international event.
But that’s what the former American and WNBA player turned Australian has done at the Asia Cup in India to earn SWOOP Play of the Weekend honours.
Griffin helped Australia to the silver medal at the event with an extraordinary 30 points and 15 rebounds in the gold medal decider which Japan won by just a point.
OPALS BEAT SHARP SHOOTING JAPAN
Just five days after her first game for the Opals, Griffin also chipped in with three assists and two steal for her best performance in the green and gold.
She was also named in the All-Star Five alongside Japan’s Manami Fujioka and Moeko Nagaoka, China’s Li Yueru and Korea’s Lim YungHui.
Griffin became an Australian citizen in 2015.
