CHERRY ON THE TOP
Emilee Cherry celebrated the extraordinary milestone of scoring her 100th world series try in Australia’s quarter-final victory in the world rugby sevens series event in Japan.
Cherry, who was later injured, became only the second player to reach the milestone after New Zealand’s Portia Woodman.
“It was nice to kind of get the monkey off the back and get that 100 finally,” Cherry said.
Australia finished third in the tournament won by New Zealand after beating Fiji in their playoff for the bronze.
SEVENS WOMEN HAVE FIGHT ON THEIR HANDS
RUNNING ONTO WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP STAGE
Both the Australian men’s 4x100m and women’s 4x400m relay teams have qualified for the world championships in London by advancing to the medals round at the IAAF World Relays in Nassau.
The star-studded women’s 4x400m team including Morgan Mitchell, Anneliese Rubie, Ella Nelson and Olivia Tauro guaranteed their place at the world championships later this year by finishing second in their heat in Nassau.
SHORT AND SWEET: BIG WINS, BIG MOVES
The women’s 4x800m relay of Lora Storey (NSW), Abbey de la Motte (Tas), Zoe Buckman (Vic) and Heidi See (NSW) won a bronze at the event in a time of 8:21.08.
“The 4x400m women are becoming a genuine challenger on the world stage, “ said head coach,” Craig Hilliard said.
“We have great depth in the women’s 400m at the moment. Ella and Olivia, who ran today, did not run in the Olympic final, and we’ve got a great mix of experienced and developing athletes that are not in Nassau but capable of slotting into the team as required. It’s an exciting time.”
NETBALL BOUNCES BACK FROM DRAMAS
Netball has been out through the ringer in recent days but the drama off the court failed to impact the quality on it.
In a much-anticipated double-header in Sydney, the Giants were beaten by the Magpies and the Vixens downs the Swifts.
The results saw a major change in the league ladder with the Giants toppling from first to third.

FUTURE OF AFL WOMEN ON ICE
News on the future of AFLW and it’s growth has been put on hold.
“The Commission is absolutely committed to expanding the competition,” said AFL chief Gill McLachlan said.
“We’ve asked for some more detail on how and when an expansion would unfold.
“The Commission have asked (about) a number of issues and want to make a decision in the next couple of weeks ... (we’ve) asked some specific questions around talent, alignment with existing clubs and specifically if we did expand how that process would look.”
FARRELL BIDS FAREWELL
After nearly a decade, Australian bowler Rene Farrell has revealed she will be retiring from One-Day International cricket.
But Farrell says she will still be available for Twenty20 and Test teams and will continue to play domestic cricket for the NSW Lendlease Breakers, the Sydney Thunder in the Rebel WBBL and England’s Kia Super League side the Surrey Stars.
“With preparations about to begin ahead of this year’s World Cup, the time felt right for me to retire from one-day cricket for Australia,” she said.
“I’ve had mixed fortunes in this format over the last few years and I no longer feel I can give what is required to compete at this level.”
