THE awards and accolades have continued to flow for Matildas star Sam Kerr after she was awarded the Women’s Health Sportswoman of the Year at the annual ceremony last night.
It has been an incredible 12 months for the Perth Glory and Australia striker who took home the Julie Dolan Medal for best W-League player earlier this year and has starred internationally since.
She scored a hat-trick of goals against Japan at the Matildas’ dominant Tournament of Nations effort and featured heavily in the 6-1 win over Brazil during the same competition.
She then put on a show for home fans scoring three of the team’s five goals in the 2-0 friendly series win over Brazil.
Kerr also wowed American fans during the national women’s soccer league, where she plays for Sky Blue FC, scoring the competitions first four-goal haul as she led her to a massive second half comeback win over Seattle.
The Matildas’ 6-1 win over Brazil was awarded the A-team of the Year award.
It was a star-studded evening as some of the biggest names in sport, and especially women’s sport, turned out at the International Convention Centre in Sydney.
The late Betty Cuthbert received the Hall of Fame award, which celebrates a female athlete whose outstanding contribution to her sport has made her legendary.
“Betty Cuthbert is the only Olympian, male or female, to have won a gold medal in every sprint
event, paving the way for other female athletes to make their mark on the world stage, and inspiring athletes for generations to come,” said Women’s Health editor Jacqui Mooney.
The 2017 Moment of the Year was awarded to the AFLW’s inaugural game between Carlton and Collingwood, while Olympic Mogul Skiier Britt Cox was recognised as the country’s most Outstanding Woman in Sport for 2017 after she won the world championships and a World Cup.
