ANZ Championships: What you need to know
Just hours after the Wallabies went down to England in Sydney the Hockeyroos beat Great Britain 4-1 in London to set up their clash against the US in the bronze medal decider of the tournament.
Coach Adam Commens described the performance as “really satisfying”.
The Australians shared the scoring against Great Britain with goals from Kathryn Slattery, Georgie Parker, Emily Smith and Jodie Kenny.
Slattery put first points on the board just five minutes into the match with Parker replicating the feat to put Australia up 2-0 after just six minutes.
Great Britain put first points on the board a minute after halftime with Smith and Kenny finishing off for the Hockeyroos.
“I think we saw the importance of taking your chances and we took them early, and we executed our penalty corners well and that’s why we got the result, “ Commens said.
“I was not overly satisfied with the last fifteen minutes of discipline that we showed. We had a number of cards, which put us under pressure and it gave them some chances.
“What you need to try and do in the situation where you’re ahead is to try to play smart, and to shut-out the opposition and not allow them to get first touch on the ball. I thought we did that spectacularly for three quarters of the game and then the last quarter I thought we took our foot of the accelerator a little.”
Argentina and the Netherlands will meet in the gold medal decider.
