SHE was the schoolgirl who went to the London Olympics with a dream and came home with a medal.

The teenager who turned silver into a golden moment with her infectious delight.

Jess Fox returned from London as one of Australia’s most popular and recognised athletes, feted by the media, sponsors and fans alike.

Our years on Fox says her life has changed quite dramatically from the schoolgirl she was when she headed to London, virtually unknown to the Australian public at large.

“I’ve become a little more high profile, “ said the 21-year-old.

“It has bought me an understanding of the power to inform and that I can do that in a positive way.”

Fox is using her increased profile to promote issues close to her heart.

Building the profile of canoe kayaking, pushing the message that a sport/study balance in life can be achieved.

That women deserve a fair go in the media.

“With women in sport we need to make sure it is covered properly. That it is covered with respect,” she said.

“You hear the NRL analysis, the football analysis or whatever, and then you get, ‘oh, and the Matildas won 1-0’ at the end.

“It’s been great to see more and more support for women. But things still need improving.”

Fox said while the Olympics throws the spotlight on women who have traditionally done so well in the Games arena for Australia, there is genuine interest year round in women in sport now.

“I am not interested in racing but I followed the Melbourne Cup because Michelle Payne was in it,” she said.

“Knowing she was there was really interesting for me. I think what she did was one of my best moments of last year.

“What women lack in strength sometimes, or speed, we make up for in character. It makes for interesting stories.”
