NRL Nines Women’s 2020: Dragons smash Broncos in huge upset to get revenge

The Broncos charged into the grand final undefeated during the tournament but were stunned by a Dragons onslaught in the first half, going down to St. George for the first time in their history.

The Dragons exacted revenge for last year’s grand-final loss to Brisbane, producing a 28-4 boilover of the Broncos in the women’s NRL Nines decider in Perth.

The Broncos charged into the final as raging favourites to build on their back-to-back NRLW crowns after winning three consecutive games in the pool stage - including a 13-6 defeat of the Dragons on Friday.

But St George Illawarra muscled up when it mattered most, delivering a sublime 18 minutes of Nines football to stun the Broncos before 14,739 fans at HBF Park.

The Broncos were never in the hunt, finishing with just 13 per cent of possession.

The Dragons dominated from the opening seconds, with Isabelle Kelly striking in the first minute when she sliced through for a 4-0 lead.

The Broncos were in trouble after seven minutes, Dragons interchange pocket rocket Aaliyah Fasavalu-Fa’amausili crossing to give the Red V a handy 10-0 lead at halftime.

The Broncos’ title hopes were shot after the break, with the Dragons scoring twice in four minutes, first via the classy Kezie Apps before Jessica Sergis stormed over for a shock 21-0 advantage.

Brisbane posted a late consolation try via Jayme Fressard, but the Dragons nailed the coffin shut when Maddison Weatherall crossed to complete a five-tries-to-one rout.
