SYDNEY Flames coach Cheryl Chambers said her teams close call with the Melbourne Boomers on Sunday is a wake-up call for the side hoping to secure the WNBL minor premiership this Saturday.
The Flames consolidated top spot with their closer-than-expected 72-67 win over the Boomers in an away match.
American Asia Taylor was the standout of a lacklustre performance from the Flames, with the import scoring 28 points and making 15 rebounds in the win.
The Flames jumped ahead early but lost the second and third periods before coming home strongly to take the match.
Chambers said her charges “just didn’t come to play’’ in a match they needed to win to keep their quest for the minor premiership on track.
WHAT FUTURE HOLDS FOR FORMER OPAL
“I think there was a little bit of complacency, maybe thinking about bigger fish,’’ Chambers said.
The ‘bigger fish’ is Dandenong, the team the Flames must beat on Saturday at home to secure top spot with a round of the WNBL still to play.
On the weekend, Townsville Fire defeated the Dandenong Rangers 92-78 to enhance the Flames’ chances of finishing the regular season in top spot.
The Flames are favoured to take the split with the Rangers this weekend, with Dandenong heading to Sydney straight off another match-up against Townsville on Friday night.
The Flames are the only team to book themselves a spot in the playoffs with just two rounds of the regular season remaining
