IN a season where teenagers have ridden a wave of success and many big names have battled, Georgia Miller’s mixed results in the Nutri-Grain Ironwoman series went generally unnoticed.
Now the Northern Beaches surf lifesaver has revealed details of the health scare responsible for almost derailing her season completely.
Miller said a phone call in December rocked her world and sent her to hospital just two days after the fourth round of the Nutri-Grain iron series.

A routine pap smear had picked up a serious anomaly which potentially could have lead to cancer further down the track.
Miller’s doctors told the ironwoman she needed surgery immediately but the 21-year-old, who had raced with a badly sprained ankle the previous round, delayed it briefly so she could compete at North Wollongong round of the series.
“I was told I had to have the operation to find out what was going on with the abnormalities and had surgery in my cervix which was pretty scary,” Miller said.
“If I had let it go it could been much worse. Maybe it could have eventually lead into cervical cancer, who knows.

“That (the surgery) put me out of the water for three weeks but when I went back to train I got an infection which put me out of the water again.”
Remarkably, Miller finished fourth in the last round of the series a fortnight ago despite her hindered lead-in.
And in Sunday’s finale of the series at North Cronulla, Miller finished second over the line to fellow young gun Lana Rogers.
If anyone knows how to make a comeback it’s Miller who before last years final had her appendix out but still managed to finish fifth.

“I have had some great news. Everything has cleared up. I just have to stay in top of my tests and do routine check-ups from here on,’’ said Miller, who has gone public with her health scare to encourage women to get regular pap smear testing.
“I’m getting my confidence back now and I still want this to be a season to remember.
“I’ve still got state champs and Aussies and I just have to give it my best shot.’’
