Ellyse Perry still drags her father and brother down to the nets

With her shoulder injury behind her, Ellyse Perry has turned her full focus to next month’s ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, training with the people who started her love of cricket in the first place.

INSIGHT: Aussie cricket star Ellyse Perry in the nets with father/coach Mark

Ellyse Perry’s favourite cricket coaches will always be her father and brother.

Since she was five-years-old, the star Australian all-rounder would head down to the nets with her cricket-obsessed family.

Perry has played the game around the world, but still she finds the time to practice the basics with her dad Mark.

“Going to the nets with my dad is probably the one constant thing throughout my career that I’ve always done,” Perry said

“It actually strips back, I guess, distractions that probably come with more professional environments, to actually just go back to the nets and have a hit and work on something with Dad is super cool.

“I have loved that experience with him but also I think it reminds me of why I play the game in the first place,” Perry said.

The 29-year-old has recovered from a shoulder injury sustained in WBBL05 and has now turned all her focus towards next month’s ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.

So over Christmas, the Perry’s squeezed in as many father-daughter sessions as possible.

“When I have a hit with dad I sort of start with some really basic drills, it’s just literally underarm throws and I always progress back and do short balls so cuts and pull shots that dad throws,” Perry said.

“And then at the end of that he’ll throw some normal balls, so pace or spin and I’ll hit them for a while.”

Perry also meets her leg-spinner brother Damien during his work lunch breaks for a quick session in the nets.

“It feels like we are kids again, although I used to always have to bowl to him rather than him bowling to me,” Perry said.

“Sometimes we’ll have a bit of a bet on it and I always end up having to buy him coffees, because I reckon he gets me out on average four times a session, sometimes more.”

The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup kicks off on February 21, when Australia takes on India at Sydney Showground at 7pm.

Rare behind-the-scenes footage of Perry and her family in the nets will be featured in the third episode of INSIGHT, released on Perry’s Facebook and Instagram on Wednesday at 7.30pm.
