Ellyse Perry on the mend after hamstring surgery

In between cooking damper and watching The Last Dance during isolation — star allrounder Ellyse Perry is slowly making progress after hamstring surgery.

Rehab, cooking damper and watching The Last Dance — that’s what Ellyse Perry has been up to in isolation in Melbourne.

The Australian allrounder is recovering from surgery for the hamstring injury that cut her T20 World Cup campaign short, so this period was always going to be low key.

“It’s going really well, it’s slow going, I’m only eight weeks post surgery, but every week gets a little bit better and I’m able to do a bit more,” Perry said.

As sports around the world deal with the financial fallout from COVID-19, Perry said grassroots competitions need just as much protection as elite fixtures.

“The health benefits it gives members of the community, being fit and active but also involved in the social club and community, the support networks,” Perry said.

“That’s really the true essence of sport and where it is of such great value to society, probably far above any of the entertainment that elite sporting competitions provide.

“I think that’s more pertinent … getting people to participate in that again and be a part of their local clubs, especially in rural areas, I think it plays a big role.”

Last week, Perry re-signed with the Sydney Sixers for another two years.

The news quashed speculation that rivals the Melbourne Renegades and Melbourne Stars would poach the 29-year-old for WBBL06.

“I wasn't tossing up with any other clubs,” she said.

“Being part of the team from the start of the WBBL, and working with Ben Sawyer and all the staff and players, it’s been great. It feels like each year we build on something,

“I spent all my life in Sydney until the last year or so, so to be able to go back and see my friends and family is great.”

The star allrounder said that it’s crucial for athletes to be checking in with each other during isolation.

“A lot of athletes have relocated for their sport, they potentially don't have a huge support network around them at home because of that,” Perry said.

“It’s nice to stay in touch, I think that can make more of a difference than you realise sometimes, just reaching out and saying hello. We’re all part of something and all going through something together, even though we’re all apart.”
