Matildas prepare for final hit-out before FIFA Women's World Cup

It’s the final audition, the last chance to impress before pencil marks are rubbed out and names are inked in for the World Cup.

The fact the final run out comes against the strongest team in the world, and with a new coach still getting to know his players, means the stakes suddenly start to climb higher still.

That’s why the Matildas are anxious to impress in the cold surrounds of Colorado, preparing for Friday’s clash with the US which will be Australia’s last game before Ante Milicic names his squad for the World Cup.

It’s a test for players and coach of how quickly they are getting used to his style of play before the global showpiece in June.

The Americans also have a slight score to settle with the Matildas, having lost and drawn their last two encounters with the green and gold after never having lost to them in the previous 27 games between the two countries.

For an uncapped member of the Australian squad like Sydney FC’s Lizzy Ralston, the demands of the training ground just underline the change in environment involved in joining the national team.

“It’s a daunting test, to be involved in your first camp when it’s against the No1 team in the world,” she said. “But this is a fabulous group of girls, and I’m excited to be involved against such a powerful team.

“So far Ante Milicic has been very friendly, and given us lots of honest feedback. There’s a big emphasis with each drill on making the most of the opportunity.

“It’s definitely a big step up for me, learning about the way Ante wants us to play, especially the defensive structure.

“I’m trying to concentrate on the moment, soak up what I can, and continue to train to the best of my ability.”
