BRONCOS centre Meg Ward is set to have surgery this week on her fractured left hand she defied to play in during Brisbane’s NRLW grand final win.

The Broncos women’s side emerged slightly battered and bruised but escaped any major injuries from their historic 34-12 win over the Sydney Roosters.

The Tricolours’ fared worse, with their casualty ward added to by centre Isabelle Kelly (knee) and winger Taleena Simon (ankle) in what players said was the “most aggressive” game of the season.

Ward, who suffered the injury in Brisbane’s Round 2 clash with the Roosters, will go in for scans to her left hand this week to see if more damage was done on the weekend.

“(The hand) wasn’t too bad,” she said.

“I don’t know if I did more damage to it but I’ll get scans this week and just take it from there.

“I’ll probably get surgery this week and then start the road to recovery after that. I couldn’t miss this journey with the girls and a little break in my hand wasn’t going to stop me.”

The gutsy 24-year-old was cleared to play in the inaugural NRLW grand final five days before kick off.

The young gun made seven runs for 50m and five tackles during the hour-long game which fellow teammate Teulia Fotu-Moala said was a very physical game.

“(The grand final) was such an intense game, it picked up a level,” she said.

“It was really aggressive. It was a battle in the forwards. Before the game, we wanted to go out and hunt and not be hunted.

“We knew we had to work just as hard for each other because there wasn’t going to be another game after this.

“I was in awe of my team. I spent the last two months with them so to get the win was awesome.”

Thirteen of the Broncos run-on squad head over to New Zealand on Wednesday to prepare for next week’s Test match between the Jillaroos and Kiwi Ferns.
