Massive bets already taken on Winx in Apollo Stakes despite unbackable odds

Winx might seem to be at unbackable odds but that hasn’t deterred some fearless punters from placing huge six-figure bets on the champion to continue her winning streak in the Group 2 Apollo Stakes.

Sky Racing news update

THE invincible Winx monopolises betting the same way she dominates her racetrack rivals.

Winx might be at prohibitive odds for her comeback in the Apollo Stakes at Royal Randwick tomorrow but this hasn’t stopped the TAB taking some of the biggest bets ever for the champion mare.

Soon after Winx completed her final track gallop at Rosehill yesterday morning, a fearless TAB punter wagered $225,000 at $1.09 on the great mare to score her 30th consecutive win tomorrow. This punter is eyeing a profit of $20,250.

This massive bet came 24 hours after another TAB punter had separate bets of $150,000 and $100,000 at $1.08 on Winx for a potential profit of $20,000.

“The amount of money that TAB has received since the confirmation of the Apollo Stakes field has been staggering in terms of the size of the bets that have been placed,” TAB’s Trent Langskaill said.

“The (two) bets of (totalling) $250,000 at $1.08 yesterday and $225,000 at $1.09 (yesterday) morning have usurped the $201,200 wager at $1.22 that was plonked on Winx to win last year’s Cox Plate on the morning of the race.”

The largest Fixed Odds wager ever placed with TAB was $250,000 at $1.14 on Black Caviar before she won her final race, the T.J. Smith Stakes at Randwick six years ago.

Winx’s cruised through a routine track gallop convincing jockey Hugh Bowman that she is ready to extend her famous winning streak and score her 30th consecutive win in the Apollo Stakes.

“Her fitness levels have increased over the last month or so, she looks excellent in the coat and has a glow in her eye,’’ Bowman said.

Winx is a rising eight-year-old mare starting her final race campaign but trainer Waller said the closer it is getting to raceday the better he is feeling because he can find “no change” to the great mare’s attitude to racing.

“She’s still working extremely well, and her body language is telling us she’s enjoying what she’s doing and that’s all we have to worry about,’’ Waller said.

“Only a couple of days out from the first-up run I’m pretty comfortable knowing that the preparation’s gone really well.”
