Weekend best bets: Flemington, Rosehill, Eagle Farm, Morphettville

Three winners last week and our tipsters are confident of landing plenty of winners on Derby Day at Flemington and the Golden Eagle at Rosehill Gardens. WHO CAN AND WHY?

Off & Racing - October 31

Our experts give you an early shot at finding a winner at the major races around the nation this weekend.

Last week … three winners. Herald Sun form analyst Michael Manley was on the money with his value bet Fine Dane ($4.30). Manley and Chris Vernuccio were also spot-on with Lys Gracieux ($2.60) in the Cox Plate, while Newsracing’s Darren Prendergast bounced back onto the winners’ list with Greyworm ($2.10). A couple of scratchings took the heat out of the Sydney team and Nathan Exelby’s frustrating run of seconds continued.

FLEMINGTON

MICHAEL MANLEY (Herald Sun). Form: 21423

ZOUTORI (Race 1, No. 4 — $2.20)

Followed first-up win in fast time with a third to Sunlight and Santa Ana Lane both over this track and distance. That’s great form for this.

Value bet: SOUND (Race 4, No. 2 — $14)

SIMON MOY (NewsRacing). Form: 21425

VEGAS JEWEL (Race 2, No. 5 — $3.30)

Tough assignment up against Thousand Guineas winner but continues to show huge improvement.

Value bet: ANGELIC RULER (Race 5, No. 13 — $16)

CHRIS VERNUCCIO (NewsRacing). Form: 21143

EXCEEDANCE (Race 6, No. 6 — $4.80)

This is the race Team Hawkes had their eye on since the Golden Rose. He looks a horse suited for the straight and his jump out last week was excellent. The blinkers go on and any rain won’t dampen his chances.

Value bet: CHIEF IRONSIDE (Race 8, No. 15 — $13)

NICK QUINN (TAB). Form: 21123

FLIT (Race 2, No. 1 — $2.40)

Comes into the race after winning the Group 1 Thousand Guineas last start when held up at key stages in the straight. Gives the indication that she will relish the 2000 metres and has won her only career start at Flemington to date. Anchor her winning the Wakeful and be on her for the Oaks before she does.

Value bet: KAVALMO (Race 3, No. 11 — $11)

MARKETS: TAB FIXED ODDS

ROSEHILL GARDENS

RAY THOMAS (Daily Telegraph). Form: 22132

TALLY (Race 6, No. 1 — $4.80)

Value bet: ZARDORO (Race 2, No. 4 — $7)

MATT JONES (Daily Telegraph). Form: 2152s

KOLDING (Race 7, No. 3 — $5)

He’s been on fire since being gelded and his Epsom win last start was super. The good barrier is a huge plus and he beat a subsequent Group 1 winner two starts back.

Value bet: ASTERIUS (Race 3, No. 1 — $5)

SHAYNE O’CASS (Sportsman). Form: 1305s

KOLDING (Race 7, No. 3 — $5)

Beat subsequent Group 1 winner Fierce Impact in the Bill Ritchie then won the Epsom, beating subsequent Cox Plate placegetter Te Akau Shark. Had a tick-over trial in between the Epsom and the Golden Eagle, and looked like a machine. Drawn to win.

Value bet: SIGNORE FOX (Race 8, No.10 — $41)

DARREN PRENDERGAST (NewsRacing). Form: 53281

PIERATA (Race 8, No. 1 — $2.80)

Quality sprinter wasn’t beaten far when fifth in The Everest. Fourth-up in the autumn he won the Group 1 All Aged Stakes after finishing fifth in the TJ Smith. Can produce another big performance here.

Value bet: CHAPADA (Race 6, No. 7 — $7.50)

MARKETS: TAB FIXED ODDS

EAGLE FARM

NATHAN EXELBY (The Courier-Mail). Form: 56222

FRANCISCA (Race 7, No. 12 — $3.90)

Yep, she’s a money muncher all right, with just three wins in 22 starts and no less than 10 defeats at $5.50 or shorter since she last won a race in August last year. BUT this looks her easiest assignment. Her rivals here are average at best and she’s racing like she will appreciate the mile again now (her two goes last season were sound). She should be closer in the run this time and banking on her class comparative to her rivals being enough to see her break the run of outs.

Value bet: THE CARPENTER (Race 6, No. 8 — $21)

MARKETS: TAB FIXED ODDS

MORPHETTVILLE

LINCOLN MOORE (The Advertiser). Form: 31918

SECRET BLAZE (Race 3, No. 4 — $2.50)

Fitter for a nice return from a spell. Raced very well last campaign in stronger company and although over further might be good enough to hit back quickly jumping to the mile.

Value bet: MORVADA (Race 8, No. 2 — $19)

MARKETS: TAB FIXED ODDS

*Note: TAB Fixed Odds prices correct at time of publishing

*Code: x denotes spell. s represents selection scratched.
